- Abbreviation: BODThe dissolved oxygen required for the respiration of a population of aerobic organisms present in water. Expressed in terms of the oxygen consumed in water at a temperature of 20°C per unit time. The BOD is used as an indication of the degree to which the sample of water is polluted, particularly by inorganic nutrients for plants.
