retroposon

retroposon
A transposable element that moves via reverse transcription but lacks the long terminal repeat sequences necessary for autonomous transposition. Much of the repetitive DNA that makes up a large proportion of eukaryotic genomes consists of silenced (i.e. inactive) retroposons.
Synonym: retro-transposon.
