- apical meristem
- A region of the tip of each shoot and root of a plant in which cell division is continually occurring to produce new stem and root tissue, respectively. Two regions are visible in the apical meristem: An outer 1-4-cell layered region (the tunica), where cell divisions are anticlinal; and below the tunica, (ii) the corpus, where the cells divide in all directions, and increase in volume.
