Abbreviation: ARMG
Genes (usually of bacterial origin) used as selection markers in
transgenesis, because their presence allows cell survival in the presence of normally toxic antibiotic agents. These genes were commonly used in the development and release of first generation transgenic organisms (particularly crop plants), but are no longer favoured because of perceived risks associated with the unintentional transfer of antibiotic resistance to other organisms.
