ethidium bromide

ethidium bromide
A fluorescent dye which can intercalate between base pairs of double-stranded DNA, and hence is much used to stain DNA in gels. The dye fluoresces when exposed to UV light. It is a known to be a strong mutagen and is also possibly both a carcinogen and a teratogen.
