Chakrabarty decision

Chakrabarty decision
A landmark legal case in the U.S.A., in which it was held that the inventor of a new micro-organism whose invention otherwise met the legal requirements for obtaining a patent, could not be denied a patent solely because the invention was alive. This has set the precedent for the patenting of life forms.
