human artificial chromosome

human artificial chromosome
Abbreviation: HAC
Analogous to yeast artificial chromosome, a construct comprising a human centromere and telomeres, which would allow for the cloning of very large fragments of DNA, and their transfer into human cells for the purpose of gene therapy. Not yet established as a working technology, although some partial success has been reported.
